Mahanaim Women’s Empowerment Program
By Dency Michael, Trustee
Bethania Kids is pleased to announce its newest ministry in South India: Mahanaim Women’s Empowerment Program!
Located on the grounds of Mahanaim Day Care Center in Kodaikanal, Mahanaim Women’s Empowerment Program reaches out to local women who are limited in skills and opportunities to work outside the home. Says program administrator Dency Michael, “All the women are from poverty-stricken families. They look forward to coming to the center every day to learn new skills and have fellowship with the other women and staff. They also feel relieved from their stress.”
Participants in the Mahanaim Women’s Empowerment Program learn skills applicable toward work in local textile industries, including knitting, sewing, and embroidery.
Newly empowered to contribute to their families’ financial wellbeing, participants pursue work in their local communities. “Some of the women have now purchased sewing machines and are earning a living as tailors,” Michael explains. Mothers who are faced with balancing work and child supervision may also have the option to work from home.
Dency Michael is confident that participants in the Mahanaim Women’s Empowerment Program will enjoy lasting success: “Most of the women are housewives confined to the four walls of their houses, whose lives consist mainly of doing their household chores. This program enables them to come out of their restricted lives and be exposed to the world. It enriches their soul.”
