Joshua Care Center

The Joshua Care Center is located in the township of Kodaikanal in the Palni Hills of South India (7000 ft. elev.) Disease, abandonment, unemployment, alcoholism and abuse are the major hardships for children in the area. Inadequate clean water supply especially impacts the youngest children, and the threat of infectious disease is always present.

It’s 8:30 a.m. and your heart melts as our 30 young children (ages 2-5) arrive at Joshua Care Center, some of them having walked up to 3 miles to get there. But here they are safe, they are fed nutritious meals and snacks, get full health care, and are taught reading, writing, Bible songs, poetry, Bible stories and basic hygiene. And they laugh–especially during the puppet shows!

At 4 p.m. the young children leave and the 30 graduates of the day care center (ages 6-17) arrive for after-school care to receive academic tutoring, learn vocational skills (basket-making, knitting and sewing) as well as continuing their Christian education. A medical and public health team provides immunizations, nutritional supplements and tracks growth. The Joshua Care Center also provides hygiene and other public health education for the community.

Under the loving and caring leadership of Chithra and her staff, each of the children at Joshua Care Center is given individual attention and monitored for academic, physical and emotional progress. Regular home visits are made to speak with the parents and assess the children’s home environment. As we serve the most needy and poor in the area, the home is often just one or two rooms with a tin roof and often lacking running water.

With God’s abundant blessings and the continuing support and prayers of our sponsors and donors, these children are given a chance for a better and healthier life. They go forth in confidence, knowing of God’s love for them and having experienced that love through Chithra and the staff of Joshua Care Center.
