Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus showed deep compassion for people with physical and intellectual disabilities, affirming their dignity and worth as beloved children of God. Inspired by His example and His call to care for “the least of these,” Bethania Kids has partnered with the Church of South India Rehabilitation Centre in Kodaikanal, India, since 1995.
A Place of Hope for Children in Kodaikanal
The Rehabilitation Centre was originally established to serve children with polio. Because of the region’s rugged mountain terrain, many children were unable to travel for medical treatment, corrective surgeries, or assistive devices, leaving them isolated and without the care they needed. The Centre became a place of hope, ensuring these children received the services they needed.
Supporting Children with Disabilities in India
Today, the Centre serves more than 100 children and young adults with a wide range of disabilities, including cerebral palsy, hearing and visual impairments, developmental disabilities, and other physical and intellectual challenges. Most come from families with limited financial resources who would otherwise have little or no access to specialized care.
Providing Comprehensive Disability Care and Education
The Centre provides comprehensive, free services designed to help every child develop their God-given potential. These include special education, physical and occupational therapy, medical care, nutritious meals, transportation, residential accommodations, assistive devices, and mobility aids. Through this compassionate, holistic approach, children and young adults receive the care, encouragement, and support they need to grow, learn, and thrive.
Vocational Training Builds Independence
Older students also participate in vocational training programs that foster independence and prepare them for meaningful employment. They learn to manufacture environmentally friendly products such as leaf plates, paper bags, and paper cups. Because plastic has been banned in Kodaikanal, these sustainable products are in high demand throughout the community, creating valuable opportunities for students to develop practical skills while contributing to the local economy. This hands-on training builds confidence, promotes self-reliance, and equips graduates to participate more fully in their communities.
